KBW Foundation Apprenticeship Program

The mission of the KBW Educational Foundation is to stimulate interest and growth in the industry through educational projects.

What are the benefits of hiring an apprentice?
There are many students or adults who would welcome the opportunity to learn glass art techniques, or assist with retail or manufacturing tasks. A glass retail store always needs someone to put away supplies, take inventory, answer phones, and many other odd jobs that need to be accomplished.

In a studio there are many tasks that would welcome another pair of hands such as preparation of the work, organizing supplies and clean up. An apprentice can also help with exhibitions or act as a teacher’s aide on occasion.

In my years as a working studio artist and owner of a retail store, I was fortunate to have an apprentice working part-time under my direction. It was beneficial to me and a unique opportunity for them to be exposed to, and learn glass art. It was very rewarding to me to act as a mentor to an eager student. For instance, after a few years of working with a woman from Israel as my studio apprentice, she moved back to her native country, Israel. Within months, she opened up her own glass art studio and gallery there.

Compensating an apprentice

Minimum wage or more is usually the starting pay depending on the type of apprentice duties, or experience of the applicant. Sometimes an apprentice might like to assist in exchange for classes or supplies. Some schools offer a work-study program that match or supplement the salary you pay.

Locating an apprentice

Many high schools and colleges have employment services available to the students. Call your local school to find out. If your apprentice is in school, it is also a great entry for you to offer demonstrations, classes, or initiate glass art classes at the school.

Putting an ad in a local newspaper is usually a successful option. If you have a website, this would be an ideal place to post your offer. There are several free classified websites.

The KBW Foundation is always interested in knowing if you have had experience with sponsoring an apprentice.
